Nancy Trejos has been a journalist for more than two decades, covering various subjects and traveling all around the world.

She has been the cruise editor at Travel Weekly. She has been the hospitality editor at online travel publication Skift. She spent seven years as a travel reporter for USA TODAY, writing about hotels, airlines, cruises, and every other aspect of the travel industry. She traveled extensively for USA TODAY, writing about destinations such as Germany, Ireland, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Colombia, Brazil, and Cuba. She has also explored the United States, telling tales from Hawaii, San Diego, Texas, Portland, Maine, Puerto Rico, and more.

Previously, she covered various news beats during a 12-year stint at The Washington Post. They included education, local government, real estate, and personal finance. In 2006, she ventured to Baghdad to write about the war in Iraq during a two-month tour of duty. That led to many adventures all over the Middle East, particularly in Beirut, Lebanon.

She spent her final years at the Post as a travel writer, adding more countries and cities to her list of destinations visited.

She is the author of the personal finance memoir “Hot (Broke) Messes: How to Have your Latte and Drink it Too.” To complete the project, she chose Beirut as her base.

Nancy’s father is from Colombia and her mother is from Ecuador so she spends much time in South America. She wrote a Washington Post magazine story about traveling to Colombia to find a half-brother she had never met before.

She also spent a year as a news reporter at the Los Angeles Times. One project she took on was being embedded in a precinct of the Los Angeles Police Department, writing about crime in some of L.A.’s toughest neighborhoods.
She has also worked at the Associated Press and was a contributor at Latina magazine. She graduated from Georgetown University with a B.A. in government.

In 2011, Nancy won the bronze in the investigative reporting category of the prestigious Lowell Thomas Awards for travel journalism.

Nancy grew up in Queens, New York, and returned to live there a few years ago. But travel is her passion and she is always searching for her next destination.
